Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss!
Kidsreads.com Celebrates the Seussentennial

Oh, the reads you can read!
Just open a book,
Take a good look,
And follow the good Doctor's lead.

OK, the verse is not so hot; Dr. Seuss I am not. But I think this rhyme definitely has the right kind of reading spirit.

Did you know that March 2nd is Dr. Seuss' (1904-1991) birthday? If he were still alive, he would be turning 100 years old. Wow. So, what could be a better day to celebrate reading and children's books? That's just what kids and adults everywhere will be doing on March 2nd, which is also Read Across America Day.

In 1998, the National Education Association (a national organization for teachers) got together with Dr. Seuss' publisher, Random House, and many educational and literacy groups to create the Read Across America project. They encouraged teachers, parents and community leaders around the country to make time on March 2nd to read a favorite book with a child. On March 1, 2002, almost 30 million children and adults took part in the fun. Lots of them even wore striped hats, just like the one the Cat in the Hat wears. Pretty cool, huh?

This year's theme is even more special as we celebrate the Seussentennial.

If you're a Seuss fan you know that the good Doctor's works have never been more popular. Here we've rounded up most of the Dr. Seuss classics, including the newest Seuss work (published in 2000), GERALD McBOING BOING.

In celebration of the Seussentennial there is a new book about the life of Dr. Seuss, called THE BOY ON FAIRFIELD STREET: How Red Geisel Grew Up to Become Dr. Seuss by Kathleen Krull, with paintings by Steve Johnson and Lou Fancher.
