DOGLAND
by Will Shetterly
Forge
ISBN: 0765342332
Ages 9-12
448 pages

It's 1959 and the Nix family has moved to Latchahee County, Florida, to open Dogland --- a motel, restaurant, and zoo, all in one! Luke Nix, the owner, hires some workers to get the place cleaned up and make some repairs. It isn't long before Dogland is open and it becomes a big success! But then Luke Nix and his workers start to run into some unsympathetic locals. The problem is that Ethorne Hawkins, one of Dogland's workers, is black and, at that time, white people didn't like black people having jobs they felt belonged to them.

Soon the racial problems cause Dogland to lose business, especially when another tourist attraction opens up in the same town. Will white people start treating black people better, or will the Klu Klux Klan run the Nix family out of business?

I liked this book because it tells what happened in America in the late 1950's and early 1960's, and because it had a lot of dogs in it. How would you have felt if you were the Nix family or one of the workers? If you like reading books about animals, read this book to find out what happens to Dogland, the workers, and the Nix family!
